Among numbers of oriental style tea room scattered around Bangkok, "Double Dogs" has a unique charm that place it on top of my "favourite" list. Not only do they have a vast variety of teas from China, Taiwan, Japan, and the North of Thailand - they also have this relaxing and serene ambience, like an oasis hidden just a step away from the busy Yaowarat road. Like every other tea room, customers can just order teas and snacks from the menu, enjoy the tea, and leave. However, with the owner being a skillful tea master who's truly passionate about tea, you'll have a much more interesting experience when you come to buy tea here.. (Just make sure the owner is there at the time. The staffs are all nice and well-trained, but they don't have the same authority.) What I like about buying tea there is, it shows the old ways of Yaowarat trading style...You don't just come in, look at the price tag and pay. Instead, the owner will help you find your favourite tea through lots of discussions and series of tea-tasting..many of them are not on the menu...until you get the tea that you like. And then it's time to discuss the price. How much he let you taste also depends on each individuals, though. Now some examples of their teas that I've tried.. ▪Matcha (Usucha or Koicha) - the choices range from bakery-grade matcha to a Baba Mukashi from Uji and Single Estate Narino. ▪ Sencha - I tried Yame Sencha and Mie Sencha. The Yame sencha has a more gentle fragrance and less bitterness so I like it more. ▪ Yame Gyokuro / Premium Yame Gyokuro - One of the best you can find in Bangkok. ▪ Ti Guan Yin - I like its warm fragrance. ▪ Huang Jing Gui - A light Chinese tea with underlying flowery fragrance which comes naturally from fermentation. ...And a lot more that I can't remember the difficult Chinese names...Whether you are just a thirsty customer or a tea connoisseur, at Double Dogs, I believe you'll find your cup of tea.
