แซ่บอีลี่ เอเวอรี่เดย์ (Zaab Eli Everyday) @101 The Third Place ปุณณวิถี อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] Zaab Eli The busiest restaurant at @101truedigitalpark by far but it scares me to death as every signature of theirs is an Isaan salad with black Plaraa-laced dressing. I was alone yesterday and really wanted to try something new. I guess sometimes you have to trust the crowd and take the leap of faith. I sidestepped the signatures and ordered a grilled beef bowl and a standard papaya salad. The papaya salad was superb, with the papaya strips bigger than usual, and super fresh and crisp. The beef was a big serving, seasoned well, but also super chewy and sinewy. The egg yolk cured in fish sauce though, sheer genius. It's one of the richest, tastiest bites around that's for sure. Will order this rice bowl again, but with grilled pork neck and more cured egg yolk! #zaabeli #strangerfirstimpression #thaifood #isaanfood #thailandupdate #amazingthailand #punnawithi #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

ชวนคิทเช่น สาขาเซ็นทรัลเวิลด์ ราชประสงค์ อาหารจีน
[Quick Update] Chuan Kitchen CentralWorld The best Singapore/Malaysian food restaurant is now open in CentralWorld. My favourites are the Bak Kut Teh, both soup and dry versions, Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow (if you like slightly sweet). Their seafood is always excellent. I was surprised by the excellence of their Salted Egg Fish Skin, so this is my new must-order at the restaurant, along with their Xiaolongbao. ดรอป บาย โด สาขาสุขุมวิท 101/2 อุดมสุข เบเกอรี่/เค้ก
[First Impressions] DROP BY DOUGH The most stylish place that has opened in my hood hands-down, Drop by Dough specializes in donuts and coffee. The classic vanilla was legit, though not spectacular. Highly recommend the rose berry as well as the lemon meringue. Their donuts have a ring in the centre and yet are nicely filled throughout, and wasn't too sweet. Coffee was solid as well. Will definitely try all the flavours one by one. #strangerfirstimpression #dropbydough #ilovemyhood #udomsukmyfoot #bangkokcafehopping #cafehopbkk #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

Local Hand Coffee สุขุมวิท101/1 คาเฟ่
Been loving Local Hand for a while now. Barista Kor hand-roasts his beans in small batches and proves that you don't need expensive flashy machines to make special coffee. Here's his new cream latte, latte frothed up to have the smoothness of cream and served in a mug like Guinness to be drank straight from the mug like Stout too. เพิ่มเติม

Devilish Smokin' BBQ Shed สุขุมวิท101/1 แฮมเบอร์เกอร์
[Wah Lau Eh! Update] Back in my local, Devilish, which has served my family faithfully for most part of 6 years. It's not an exaggeration to say that Andrew and Patrick watched (and are still watching) my kids grow up. There were ups and downs over the years (mainly ups) but their passion to solve hunger problems with decadent plates at accessible prices remains unchanged, and continuously come up with new dishes week after week(to do this for the best part of a decade is not easy). We mostly have their low and slow BBQ and Fish 'n Chips. I also like their cherry coke. All you see, for around 1200THB with free-flow salad bar! #wahlauehstampofapproval #devilisheats #lowandslowbbq #fishnchips #ilovemyhood #strangerinbangkok #เพื่อแซลมอน #tespowerequipment เพิ่มเติม

LT Fish Restaurant at True Digital Park ปุณณวิถี อาหารจีน
A refreshing find at 101 The Third Place. Have always felt that authentic China food is elusive in Bangkok, but this is as authentic as it gets. Well, probably not as spicy as what people eat in Sichuan, but I'll take it. Sauerkraut fish is an amusing translation, as this restaurant technically specializes in 1 single dish, that is boneless seabass slices in spicy tangy fish soup made with preserved mustard green (not fermented cabbage). I am quite satisfied with the soup, packed a punch in flavour, though most of their dishes felt slightly heavy in MSG (I personally don't mind that once in a while). Also, be careful while ordering, as I feel that the smallest portion should be sufficient for 2, while the medium portion for 4. A useful addition to the hood. I hope they do well enough to survive, and introduce many more dishes in the process.

The House Of Smooth Curry วิทยุ อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] First time at the refurbished F&B floor of The Athenee Hotel, which currently houses many of the more interesting eating locations in town. First up, The House of Smooth Curry. I wasn't feeling too well yesterday, so was a little worried about how my body would react to an afternoon of authentic Thai flavours. The experience ended up to be a really great one, because The House of Smooth Curry does not emphasize on giving you a punch of extreme taste sensations, but a delicate balance of spices with premium local produce. I loved Chef Ton's mother's curry, which surprised me by the use of minced chicken (and not whole chicken pieces), as well as the fresh grouper used to make their fried fish dish, unlike most restaurants which take the easy way out using sea bass or even worse, tilapia. The chinese-style fragrance of the stir-fried lotus stem (combination of garlic, oyster sauce and fermented soy bean paste) was also super alluring. I guess I will have to add them to my list of recommended Thai restaurants to bring important corporate guests for a good quality and safe local meal (other names being Patara, Celadon and The Local).

[First Impressions] Jua Tucked at the deep end of the same soi as Tropic City, it seems an unlikely spot for such vibe and energy. Sitting by the bar, sipping some strong Suntory Highball, surrounded by a chatty crowd on a Friday night, and most importantly, pairing the drinks with properly-crafted Izakaya-style dishes pushed out from the kitchen. Looking at how the yakitori turned out (meatball/chicken wing), I am sure yakitori here generally will not disappoint. Don't forget to look at the specials board, where we picked out the yummy miso clams, which I couldn't get enough of the flavourful broth. Then again, from where I work/stay, it seems impossible to reach Jua from work at a reasonable dinner hour, so a night out at Jua for me would feel like an occasional occurrence. For those living and working in the area though, it's undoubtedly a gem in the neighbourhood. #strangerfirstimpression #jua #juabangkok #charoenkrung #strangerinbangkok #bangkokfoodies #2ndBirthday เพิ่มเติม

อะเบาท์ อีทเทอรี่ อโศก อาหารอิตาเลียน
First mention goes to chef's favourite, the Strascinati, which has a similar texture to orrechiette, made purely with semolina flour without egg. The hearty chewy pasta went perfectly with the sausage-mushroom sauce. I will have it again in a heartbeat. I also liked the seafood Scialatielli, which packed a wholesome punch and a spicy kick. It's one of the specials at About Eatery for the week to commemorate World Pasta Week. The cauliflower starter was excellent as well. Blast-roasted so it's still crunch and juicy on the inside, it was surprisingly fresh and delicious with the gorgonzola sauce. I am intrigued by About Eatery's attempt to transform itself into a legitimate Italian mainstay in downtown Bangkok and by the looks of it they are certainly on the right track. They also have a weekday set lunch at an unbeatable price (295++ for 2-course 355++ for 3-course), so if you are in the Asoke vicinity, there's no reason not to stop by. #abouteatery #asokemyfoot #italian #italianfood #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

[First Impressions] 真真 JingJing Ice-cream Bar and Cafe Of the few more popular 'hipster' cafes that popped up in Yaowarat recently, I must say I like Jing Jing the most. I wouldn't go so far to say that the ice cream is amazing, but owner Poo really shows her creativity in some of her flavours. She doesn't hold back on her alcoholic ice cream combos, and has monthly specials, with this month's being the very interesting and refreshing sugar cane sorbet (which she pairs with Chang beer ice cream, well, because, well, elephants eat sugar cane). What I am more sold about Jing Jing is the fact that it sells ice cream at Yaowarat and has a really beautiful 2nd floor for you to enjoy a bit of a breather. It hits the spot as the ideal rest-stop in the middle of your sweaty Chinatown exploration. PS. It's now within super near walking distance from the new Wat Mangkon MRT Station.

[First Impressions] Supanniga Eating Room The food at Supanniga isn't new to me. It's one of a handful of Thai restaurants I recommend friends to all the time. That said, the new opening of Sanam Chai MRT Station has changed the game completely. Going to Supanniga Tha Thien is a breeze now. You can not only enjoy the excellent food at Supanniga, but enjoy it by the majestic Chao Phraya River right opposite Wat Arun. Go during sunset and you can bask in the many faces of the Temple of Dawn. Back to the food, you must always order the Moo Chamuang (stewed pork in chamuang leaves) and burnt cabbage at Supanniga, and I will leave you to choose the rest at your own preference. Dessert-wise, the Thai tea panna cotta and Mango Sticky Rice (with coconut ice-cream) are safe bets. Embarrassed to say this was the first time I dined in Bangkok by the river opposite Wat Arun, and I admit that it's something everyone in Bangkok should do at least once. With it being much more accessible now, there really should not be any excuse to skip this experience, especially over food as solid as Supanniga's. #watarun #thathien #templeofdawn #sanamchaimrt #sanamchaimyfoot #supannigaeatingroom #supannigathathien #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

Mia Restaurant พร้อมพงษ์
[First Impressions] Mia restaurant Without going into details, here's my summary of Mia, the only restaurant in the world which houses not 1 but 2 young people in my "Follow the Chef" feature series. Naturally, I am super excited. 1. Maybe the only restaurant in Bangkok that has a dedicated dessert bar, I guess it's also a masterstroke from the owners who identified they have one of the best pastry chefs in Bangkok on their hands (looking at you Michelle Goh). So, Mia is not only a restaurant for a full night out, it's also a legitimate place to hop in for desserts after dinner to complete your night out. 2. It has 3 unique dining rooms upstairs so that your separate visits can feel completely different. 3. With Pongcharn Russell from my old haunt Freebird helming the kitchen, you can be sure that the food is more sophisticated than it looks. In any case, from my brief encounters at Mia, here's my ideal dinner from the current menu: - Focaccia with homemade ricotta and rocket pesto - Grilled Aubergine OR Beetroot Parpadelle - Red Cabbage Risotto - Scallop Carpaccio - Hot-smoked Salmon - Hasselback Potato OR Truffle Mac n Cheese - Tarte Tatin (pre-order please) Washed down with Thrill of the Dill. #strangerinbangkok #newopeningbkk #tartetatin #miabangkok #followthechef #topcheftop #gomichellegoh #strangerfirstimpression #weekend เพิ่มเติม

เฮียให้ เอกมัย อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] เฮียให้ HereHai ต้นตำรับ ข้าวผัดโคตรปู Recently heard about this crab fried rice place from my wife's Singaporean friend who raved about it. After trying this for myself, I have to say the hype has not been misplaced. The fried rice, especially, is quite fantastic, full of "wok hei" in every bite. Another dish that is filled with "wok hei" is the stir-fried cabbage with fish sauce and these 2 dishes are my personal recommendations. Many are attracted by Here Hai because of the generous toppings of premium seafood (sourced from Surat Thani) on virtually every dish, it is of course a great bonus, but the chef's wok skill is easily the stand-out point of this viral eatery. They are closed on Monday, a little bit elusive (on the 2nd floor the fish ball noodle shop opposite Donki Mall near Ekamai Soi 12) and usually super crowded. Those who are afraid of waits/crowds, the delivery option is easily available. #herehai #insanecrabfriedrice #friedrice #thaiseafood #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #strangerfirstimpression #thaifood #wokhei เพิ่มเติม

คาซ่า พาสต้า สุขุมวิท101/1 อาหารอิตาเลียน
One of my original inspirations to start writing about under-the-radar restaurants, Casa Pasta, has undergone a face-lift, probably necessary due to the sprouting up of spin-off/s and old age, though I do not know whether I love the new green/white-feel more than the previous European Tavern atmosphere or not. More importantly, the team has remained. I made a trip down to try, and thankfully, their classy half-moon pizza is still the same, as are the other dishes. So, a newer, brighter Casa Pasta pushing out plates of affordable Italian food that's better than most you can find in town, with the usual slight lack of plating-finesse and service precision. The new old Casa Pasta that I love. Wet Wine Bar หลังสวน บาร์
[First Impressions] Wet Completing the triangle in Langsuan with Gaggan and Gaa comes Wet, the 'toilet speakeasy wine bar' helmed by Gaggan's long-time sommelier Vladimir, aiming to present his favourite wines and Gaggan's 'soul-food' in a playful environment. I generally don't listen to English music, but the soundtrack was blasting with familiar tunes growing up, an early win for Wet. I don't know much about wine, so I will not delve into it. What excites me most about Wet is the birth of a bar in Bangkok that places significant emphasis on its food offerings. The Chaat dish "Seductively Indian" was delicious, as were most other dishes I tried. The crowd pleasers will easily be the assortment of curries served with Basmati rice, as they are both yummy and substantial. Whether the food is "affordable" as stated in many online sources, I will leave you to judge for yourself, but I feel it's probably not at a price point for you to have a fulfilling dinner (unless you keep yourself to noodles and rice). It's a place more for enjoying tasty bar snacks as you chill the night away over wine and nostalgic numbers. #getwetbkk #langsuan #wet #nightlifebkk #strangerbehindbars #barfoodbkk #bangkokfoodies #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

Chez Shibata 365 Bangkok (シェ・シバタ バンコク) ทองหล่อ เบเกอรี่/เค้ก
[First Impressions] Chez Shibata 365 Because ICI was fully-booked, we made our way to the an even newer opening chez shibata 365, on the 3rd floor of Nikko Hotel, to try its French-Japanese pastry. We spent an extremely pleasant 3 hours there over various cakes, pastry and floral tea. In terms of taste, most items were commendable, though not necessarily among the very best I've tasted in the city. Then again, it was only their 2nd day of operation. My favourite item was the Vanilla Choux. The vanilla cream filling was so silky smooth, I could easily chow down a couple at one go. Good news is, if you visit Chez Shibata 365 and check in on FB from now till end of March, you will get this delicious Vanilla Choux free! Bangkok Bold Kitchen at Singha Complex เพชรบุรี อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] Bangkok Bold Kitchen at Central Embassy When visitors ask me where to go for good Thai food in Bangkok, I always say Sri Trat, Baan Ice, Khua Kling Pak Sod, Supanniga Eating Room. Add Bangkok Bold to the equation now, seriously, and it might be the most accessible one too, situated at Central Embassy, right beside Eat Thai food court. I was brought to Bangkok Bold by one of the best chefs in the country, and boy did it deliver. I wonder why I didn't think of visiting before. I tried 5 dishes, which were obviously just the tip of the iceberg of a huge menu waiting to be further explored. My favourite dish was the vermicelli with stir-fried garlic chicken mince. What also impressed me was that it actually made the extremely-boring stir-fried mixed vegetables pretty damn tasty, and this is the first time I can say this after 10 years here trying my best to avoid ordering it. I love the reasonable prices coupled with the casual ranch-style vibe that reminds me of restaurants in Australia, USA and South Africa. Homeburg ทองหล่อ แฮมเบอร์เกอร์
[First Impressions] Homeburg Actually, what I appreciated most about Homeburg was the feeling of a true Chef's Table experience. The proximity we had to the chef and the cooking action was second-to-none, and that's definitely what could be missed in the future when Taiki decides to scale up. I do not think it's necessary to explain here how obsessed Taiki is to burgers, and how much study and precision he has gone through to arrive at his current version of the "perfect" burger. Let him tell you himself when you meet him. That's half of the fun. To answer questions on, "was it worth it?" or "worth the long wait?", I can only say that the burger I had last night was Pretty.Damn.Delicious. Easily one of the best burgers I've had in Bangkok (and I've had a few). The crispy pan-fried milk bun that does not stick to your teeth, crunchy bacon and the patty with the perfect crusty sear on both sides, assembled on a burger than doesn't drip nor fall apart during the process of eating. Or maybe it's cos of the beef fat slathered all over, or the lack of ketchup (it's at most just 1 of the 12 ingredients in Taiki's Wonder Sauce). I hate ketchup. #homeburg #homeburgbkk #bkkfoodies #bangkokfoodies #ihateketchup #bestburger #bestburgerbangkok #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

คุณภรณ์ ประเวศ อาหารไทย
[Recommended] Raan Khun Porn ร้านคุณภรณ์ at Tops Market Place Udomsuk Lady luck struck when Raan Khun Porn decided to move 2 doors away from my favourite cafe Totti Coffee Shop Top Marketplace Udomsuk after its old location (market beside King Rama 9 Park) was permanently shut down. It's just a normal mixed rice stall, but I visit them for breakfast every other day. It's the single shop I patronize the most for the last few months, that itself says a lot. Khun Porn is a nice lady who might seem strict at times, but she just wants her customers to get most out of their meal. 1. She wants guests to take their own rice, so there is no wastage. Only you know how much you want to eat. 2. She is more than happy to give you a little bit of many dishes if you just want a taste. 3. If you are taking away, she wants to know when you are eating so she can decide whether to pack every dish separately (for best eating pleasure later). 4. She covers most of her trays all the time to keep the food hygienic, even though Tops Udomsuk is really clean in the first place. She opens at 6am and closes when food runs out, which usually does before 11am. She will close on unexpected days so please call beforehand at 0610398969 if you are visiting from far away.

[First Impressions] Nailao Ladna Yod Pak ราดหน้ายอดผักนายเหลา - ต้นตำรับนางลิ้นจี่ A place where the best chefs in Thailand visit for their thai traditional stir-fry fix. I loved the wok-hei (breath of the wok) in the pad see-ew, it's a little sweet, but surely one of the very best I have ever had in Bangkok (even more wok-hei than Jay Fai, just with no seafood and sold at a-tenth of the price). The Radna was good too, and I especially liked the hints of chinese wine fragrance, which is rare to find here (common in my native Sarawak), but honestly, pad see-ew was the clear winner for me comparing the 2. As you can see from the price list, despite their fame, they are still charging a super mass-market price, so I highly recommend this. #strangerfirstimpression #bangkokstreetfood #streetfood #ladna #padseeew #nailaoladnayodpak #strangerinbangkok #bangkokfoodies เพิ่มเติม

Jay Fai Pratu Phee สำราญราษฎร์ อาหารทะเล
[First Impressions/Bangkok Life Hacks] Raan Jay Fai If not for the arrangement by a friend, I would never have initiated visiting Raan Jay Fai, but I did, and I was glad to have done so. Don't think I need to say more about how she is the only street food stall in Bangkok to win a Michelin Star, or how expensive her food is, but point everyone to appreciate her skill, craft and endurance. Her mastery of the wok and charcoal fire is flawless, and what amazes me is that she can cook everything by herself from 2.30pm to midnight. I would be exhausted just simply standing in that kitchen for an hour. I don't think it is something anyone can endure without a genuine passion for what he/she is doing. Taste-wise, I liked the crab omelette and tom yum soup the most. The first bite of the crisp omelette with the succulent crab reminded me very much of a fresh pack of prawn crackers (keropok as we call it in Malaysia), and my friends nodded in agreement. The tom yum soup was nicely balanced yet packed a sharp kick of spiciness at the end. Then again, taste is subjective, none of the dishes carried a huge wow factor in terms of taste for me. Was it worth the effort then? I would say yes, because for a food lover, it is already an honour to have witnessed Jay Fai wielding the wok in her 70s. However, I would also reveal that the reservation option is now open, so PLEASE MAKE A RESERVATION BEFORE YOU GO. สวรรค์ สาทร・สวนลุม อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] Saawaan Most new openings have conflicting reviews. Saawaan is one where the noise has been overwhelmingly positive. I was lucky enough to dine there last week, and my experience was generally great, though not without some confusion. 1. I appreciate how the menu is planned to showcase specific cooking techniques used in Thai cuisine. Probably the lack of spice was to allow us to taste the subtle nuances of each dish without spiciness overpowering everything (this has been confirmed by chef Aom after further clarification). 2. Many such tasting menus I had started brightly but ended forgettably. Not at Saawaan. Their last 4 dishes were extremely balanced and strong, and that shone right through to the Petit Fours. Happy ending, they say. 3. A couple of super memorable dishes, for me the smoked fish soup with blanched Jean-Paul oyster, and the grilled Iberico Secreto (ironically the 2 imported ingredients). The dessert was a great take on pumpkin custard. 4. Superb service. The lady serving our table was unbelievably knowledgable. She could even explain how some dishes were cooked. This is not common in Thailand. I can imagine how flawless she would be conversing in Thai. I would like to congratulate the chefs Aom and Paper for a commendable effort. #R30 เพิ่มเติม

Le Boeuf (เลอ โบฟ), ทองหล่อ ทองหล่อ อาหารยุโรป
[First Impressions] Le Boeuf - The Steak & Fries Bistro The boring long weekend brought me to a couple of new places (for me at least). First up, Le Boeuf's newer branch at Thong Lor Soi 9. With Chope's 1-for-1 offer, I could eat to my heart's content. Nice ambience, good service, endless fries served in small batches to make sure they are eaten piping hot, Le Boeuf caught my attention with their HUGE dessert list as compared to their neat and focused main course choices (basically just different proteins with the same yummy signature green sauce). Ordering beef seems to be the automatic choice at a place named Le Boeuf, but trust me, if you MUST choose only one, go for the lamb. Made perfectly-medium, it was one of the best lamb chops I've had in Bangkok. The beef itself however, was alright, properly-executed, generously-seasoned. That said, I can easily find better cuts of beef elsewhere. This specialty restaurant gave me a very deep first impression, that is to go for their specialty, which is anything paired with their sauce and fries, washed down maybe with some wine. Sweet cravings can be more-effectively satisfied in other parts of Thong Lor within walking distance. #leboeuf #thonglor #thonglorsoi9 #chopedeals #1for1 #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok #parisiansteak #steak #beef #R30 เพิ่มเติม

Rossini's (รอสซินี), Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit อโศก อาหารอิตาเลียน
Rossini's never gets old in my opinion. It has one of my favourite dining rooms in the Bangkok, and all my meals here (I have patronised Rossini's a couple of times per year for 7/8 years now) have either been good or very good. Here's a closer look at what a dinner looks like at the restaurant, with my wife and I both choosing different dishes from their 4-course seafood menu. I would like to specially mention their tiramisu, served in a vacuum flask (huge satisfying serving), which I feel must rank as one of the best in town. It's not cheap, but with SPG membership, you get 20% off, and Grande club membership, you get 30% off. If you live in the hotel, anything you order for your kids gets 50% off, which is a super nice touch. #bangkoklifehacks If you want a safe place to impress someone, Rossini's would likely not disappoint. #manymanyimpressions #rossinis #michelinguide #toptablesbangkok #italianfinedining #italian #authentic #sheratongrandesukhumvit #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #R30 เพิ่มเติม

Funky Lam Kitchen ทองหล่อ อาหารฟิวชั่น
[First Impressions] Funky Lam What first intrigued me about Funky Lam was how they actually designed the space right from the start to transform the bright brunch institution that is Luka (Moto) into this funky hipster Laotian food destination with the use of blinds, lighting and a simple flip of Luka Moto's specials board. Quite brilliant, I must say. Then there's the Laotian food, something that sounds in close proximity but unfamiliar all at the same time. When the dishes were served, it felt like a mixture of Northern Thai (Sai Oua), Isaan (Larb Ped) and Vietnam (Beef soup), a tad confusing but made some sense once I had a look at the map and marked out Laos's borders. What's more important is that the food was generally very pleasant, not as spicy as I thought it would be (especially after the first bang with the fried chilli snack), but bold and tasty nonetheless. The riverweed crackers were a first for me, Sai Oua obviously cleaner and less grimey than the ones on the streets, and Larb Ped was a drier and more herby version than what I am used to. The beef marrow soup though, was the bomb. Hearty as hell, I feel it is the must-order dish at Funky Lam. I actually also enjoyed chomping into the assortment of leaves provided, as they presented a full array of taste sensations, from bitter to citrusy to sweet, making the meal more "authentic" in my opinion. So did Funky Lam help me understand what Laotian food actually is? Not really, but it sure is a good new place to have a casual dinner in Thong Lor.

[First Impressions] Celadon, The Sukhothai Bangkok If I were to be very honest, I haven't heard much about Celadon before dining here. Whenever I think of Thai fine dining, I think of Nahm, Bo.Lan, Paste, Saneh Jaan and more recently, Sorn, R.Haan and Saawaan. It seems like Celadon has been strutting along without much social media noise. Chef Rossarin's new tasting menu is as expected, strong and steady. How can it not be, with typical class and service that is associated with a hospitality institution like The Sukhothai. A couple of X-factor dishes included the colourful raw wagyu beef salad, and the coconut soup poured over seashells made of onion paste, both proving to be visual surprises and delicious dishes at the same time. If there's any gripe, it would be my usual 'problem' with fine-dining tasting menus in Bangkok in general, that is the lack of a game-changing dessert to give a perfect ending. That said, the meal itself gave me assurances that Celadon will not disappoint if I were to choose it as the location to impress visitors, be it family or corporate. More elaboration on individual dishes can be found in the photo captions. #celadonbangkok #thesukhothai #strangerfirstimpression #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #thaifinedining #finedining #thaicuisine #authentic #R30 เพิ่มเติม

ลา สกาล่า สาทร・สวนลุม อาหารอิตาเลียน
[First Impressions] La Scala Bangkok Another restaurant at The Sukhothai that feels a little under the radar. La Scala boasts a spacious interior that's classy yet not too stiff, with ample well-trained staff ever-ready to help the guests. I was a bit surprised to see La Scala almost filled up at 8+pm on a drizzly Tuesday evening. It's damning proof that some of the best restaurants make the least noise on social media. To the food, Chef David Tamburini's new seasonal Summer menu was not without some pleasant surprises. One that caught my eye was the mozarella starter, made expertly in the image of a ripe tomato (I usually see this form of expression in French desserts). The stuffed crispy potato skin on grilled octopus will be a crowd-pleaser. The unanimous favourite on the table was the dessert though, which didn't look like much. However, the combination of a smooth refreshing apple vinegar ice-cream with the rich fig compote was irresistible. The fine-dining landscape in Bangkok lacks excellent desserts imho, this was definitely one that left a great impression. Honestly, a restaurant as well-run and seasoned as La Scala doesn't leave many weaknesses for customers to pick on (even the price of the tasting menu, at 2900++ presented very good value considering the serving sizes). I definitely want to be back to try their more standard fare like pizza, pasta and more of their yummy desserts. #lascala #thesukhothai #finedining #italian #authentic #italiancuisine #toptablesbangkok #lascalabangkok #strangerfirstimpression #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #R30 เพิ่มเติม

ฟุคุอิจิ อ่อนนุช อาหารญี่ปุ่น
[First Impressions] Fukuichi Co., Ltd. 福いち Clearing my piling [First Impressions] backlog with this "bucket-list" visit to a Japanese Izakaya in Bangkok open by Japanese for Japanese, with a Japanese friend. Without native Japanese company, I would not have ordered the right things. Fukuichi is somewhat surprisingly, located a little off the usual Japanese zone, at On-Nut Soi 1 right opposite Big C. It's an Osaka-style Izakaya run by the crazy boisterous Shoichi-san, whose love for baseball can be seen everywhere in the eatery. To the food, to true Izakaya spirit, it has huge variety, great for sharing deep into the night with colleagues and friends over beer and chatter. Uniquely-Osakan highlights for me included the battered-fried pickled red ginger tempura, cream cheese cubes with dried kombu. Their collaborative chicken and cabbage hot pot with Nanase Ramen is so hearty it should be ordered as the boiling hot dish on every table. They open only in the evenings on weekdays, and from 12pm onwards on weekends. Truly a hidden gem. #osakaizakaya #izakaya #bangkokfoodies #strangerfirstimpression #fukuichi #onnut #hiddengem #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

ภัตตาคารเสฉวนสีลม สาธุประดิษฐ์ อาหารจีน
[First Impressions] Chuan Wei Fang Sichuan Restaurant In my 8 years here, Sichuan food has proven to be completely elusive. Upon arrival at Chuan Wei Fang, I observed that all the customers were native Chinese, which was a good sign. My heart pounded with excitement as I went through the menu full of familiar dishes I hardly see in Thailand. Truth be told, the food did not totally live up to my high expectations, but it was yummy nonetheless, especially the 辣子 spicy stir-fried chicken. I could eat the entire plate myself and ask for seconds. Be prepared for a full dose of Sichuan flavours as this place does not go stingy when adding the numbing Sichuan peppercorns in most of their dishes. If you are missing authentic Sichuan cuisine cooked by Chinese chefs for (mainly) Chinese customers and don't know where to go, you will likely not be disappointed here. #sichuanfood #sichuanrestaurant #sichuancuisine #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #strangerfirstimpression #Gopro เพิ่มเติม

กา ทองหล่อ อาหารฟิวชั่น
Extremely impressed by my dinner at Gaa a couple of nights ago. A few points of note: 1. There is a lot more Indian flavour notes than I expected, and that I believe is due to Chef Garima's heritage, and it's really not a bad thing, especially in this market where such spices are well-accepted. 2. Aside of the caviar add-on(even that, is local Royal Project caviar), there were no fancy ingredients. Mostly local, the mains were local scallop, crayfish, grouper and pork. It is proof that really really good things can be done with local ingredients, as long as they are in the right hands. 3. Take note of their home-made drinks, the lychee sake and coffee Kombucha were nothing short of excellent. As a summary, why I like Gaa so much is the fact that many of their dishes are conceptually challenging, yet when you eat them, they are pleasant to the palate and the flavour combinations actually make sense. I maintain that Suhring is one of the safest places to impress someone, but if you ask me personally, being Asian, Gaa's flavours lure me back more and will be my choice for a repeat visit in comparison. Please visit when the prices are still very accessible (2800THB for their 14-course) and the recommended reservation needs to only be done a week in advance. Can't promise this if you hold your horses for too long. #restaurantgaa #gaa #bangkokfoodies #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok #toptables เพิ่มเติม

QUINCE Eatery & Bar พร้อมพงษ์ บาร์
Overall, the food was comforting, approachable and extremely reliable. Chef Charlie Jones has his little twist and personality on most of the dishes without making them too edgy. I especially liked the beef tartare and the lamb shank, which was huge and extremely well-priced at 690THB. Unlike the predictable braised lamb shank, this one had a Northern African feel to it, seared, spice rubbed then slow-cooked with a gravy infused with dried fruit, the result reminded me of the heartwarming tagines I had in France. For me, Quince and Viva Thong Lo now sit at the same place in the Bangkok dining scene, a casual place where you can enjoy comforting dishes with a twist from a talented team, and at a price point that you can visit pretty regularly. #quince #quincebangkok #strangerfirstimpression #bangkokfoodies เพิ่มเติม

อิษยา สยามมิสคลับ คลองเตย・พระราม4 อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] Issaya Siamese Club Took me years to finally come here. At the end of the meal, I kind of understand why it has become sort of an 'institution' to have fine Thai food in Bangkok, especially for tourists and foreign visitors. Firstly, the house is beautiful. For best pictures, I suggest coming here in the day as it gets really dark inside at night (and many such restaurants don't even open in the day). You can take incredible photos both of the interior and exterior in the day for sure. Secondly, food presentation exuded the flamboyance of owner, Iron Chef Thailand Ian Kittichai. I saw a simple grilled chicken put into flames and a coconut dessert thrown onto my table, and I heard these are not the only 2 dishes in the menu that involve a performance of some sort. Safe is the word to describe the taste of their food. The Massaman Lamb Shank was excellent, though I wish I could remember the taste of the dishes more than how they looked or were presented. The pleasant-but-slightly-watered-down flavours reminded me of other restaurants in the similar category, like The Local and Patara Fine Thai Cuisine, just with added flair and showmanship. I recommend the Issaya experience if you are new to Bangkok, or have guests who are new to Bangkok. #issayasiameseclub #issaya #iankittichai #ironchef #toptablesbkk #bangkokfoodies #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

Brasserie Cordonnier นานา อาหารฝรั่งเศส
[First Impressions] Brasserie Cordonnier This place is proof of how incredible Sukhumvit Soi 11 can be. Of all things, you don't expect a piece of France there, especially at night, but the fact is that Brasserie Cordonnier is as French as you can get in Bangkok. Food-wise, the starters stole the show for me. French onion soup was comforting, and I could eat the whole block of Foie Gras Terrine by myself (no bread needed). Vegetarians would surely find the cold ratatouille rather satisfying. The apple tart with cinnamon ice-cream also left a good impression. What I loved the most was Brasserie Cordonnier's ability to combine a well-executed interior design concept with service and food to match, and yet be able to deliver the package at an accessible price point. Definitely a stable, reliable location in town to have some non-pretentious French food. #brasseriecordonnier #suk11 #nanamyfoot #french #frenchfood #bangkokfoodies #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok เพิ่มเติม

Divana Signature Cafe ราชประสงค์ คาเฟ่
[First Impressions] Divana Signature Cafe Before this, I was only aware of Divana as a household name for luxury spa/aromatherapy services and products. Thanks to the invitation from AroiMakMak, I had the chance to dine at their new cafe at Centralworld, which is still in its soft opening phase. Compared to many other new cafes I had been to, Divana really stands out as one which knows exactly what they are doing. Their concept is clear, that is to blend dining together with their signature products/scents to give a unique dining experience. My absolute recommendation at the cafe will be the Afternoon Tea, which is served impactfully with smoking dry ice. The scones and chocolate lava cake were excellent, and the X-factor goes to its edible centrepiece, which is a total work of art. Do keep this cafe in mind when you need a respite in the middle of a tiring shopping day at Centralworld. #divana #divanasignaturecafe #afternoontea #bkkcafehopping #cafehoppingbkk #jellyflower #hightea #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok #centralworld เพิ่มเติม

HATCH by Jkhai บางซื่อ・เตาปูน ของหวาน
HATCH by Jkhai Last week, I did my FB review on J'Khai, the seafood institution in Bangkok and mentioned that the 2nd generation is taking over in an exciting way. So here's what's happening, after graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Australia, the young ones of J'Khai have returned to open Hatch right beside the seafood restaurant, giving the place new life (not as though they lack any). Aside of serving great bakery and coffee in the cafe itself, the offerings are also on the menu of the seafood restaurant, which explains why a lot of their ideas revolve around Thai-style ingredients like coconut, banana, sweet potato, mango etc., as they have to appeal to locals from all generations. A look at the pictures and you will see how well the desserts are executed, and they constantly add new specials too. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, though it's good to note that they only open from 3pm on weekdays and close late, at midnight. #hatch #hatchbyjkhai #bkkcafe #bkkcafehopping #prachachuen #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #strangerfirstimpression เพิ่มเติม

Jamie Oliver’s Italian สยาม อาหารอิตาเลียน
Firstly, the decoration and the ambience were fantastic. It gave a classy yet comfortable feel, with areas for the bar, cold cuts, brighter areas with ample sunlight as well as a darker, more intimate zone. Service was alright, not the best but competent. Food-wise, nothing much went wrong, the bread was warm and crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. The pastas (we ordered the large size for sharing which cost 300+ baht each) were all made from fresh pasta, and tasted hearty delicious, with generous serving size. The wild mushroom risotto was pretty fantastic. If there is any gripe, I felt that the pasta itself could have been a little more al dente. The dessert was huge, rich and comforting. As we were dining as 2 families with little kids, we loved it that they purposely made it an interesting experience for the kids with a dedicated (and really affordable) kids menu presented in a fun way (more on that in a later post). This is always a plus for me. Will certainly go again. #jamiesitalian #strangerfirstimpression #familyfriendlybkk #kidfriendlybkk #familyfriendlyrestaurant #jamiesitalianbkk #bangkokfoodies #rettythailand เพิ่มเติม

เจ๊โอว สามย่าน อาหารไทย
[First Impressions] Jeh O Chula If not because of a guest from Singapore, I might not have gone all the way to Jeh O Chula just to eat a picturesque Mama noodle. After the experience, I think it is probably worth the hype, because it is a proper Thai restaurant that makes good food and not a place that only makes Tom Yum instant noodles. That said, there were just 2 of us so the noodles we went for. My guest was satisfied enough, and I must say it was well-executed and looked pretty damn good. The ingredients were fresh and tasty, especially the minced pork balls and crispy pork. I would have preferred a version that takes away the Mama Tom Yum powdered seasoning completely (as I find the sourness very artificial) but that's just my personal preference. The crispy pork (one of the signatures of Jeh O), was excellent. Please note that some online articles indicate that the Tom Yum noodles will only be available after 11pm, but we were able to get our order for the noodles in at 10.30pm. Another tip is to go early. We were there slightly after 10pm and still had to take a queue number to get in, with 12 groups before us. We got our seats in less than half an hour. Once you get into the air-conditioned interior, it's extremely comfortable. When we left at 12.30am, the queue outside was out of control, and it was only a mid-month Thursday night. #bangkoklifehacks #jehochula #instagrammablefood #mama #tomyum #thai #thaifood #bangkokfoodies #strangerinbangkok #strangerfirstimpression #rettythailand เพิ่มเติม

SHUGAA เอกมัย ของหวาน
The first impression of Shugaa was, wow, what a crazy beautiful place! Second impression: every single customer in the shop was from China. The customer base, was of course not intentional, but because some Chinese influencers successfully shared posts of Shugaa on Weibo, it became a favourite for Chinese tourists. Back to the food, it's easy to mentally-dismiss the products from Shugaa as more pretty than delicious at first sight because too many other places are like that, but after trying a couple of their desserts and drinks, I can safely say that they taste pretty good without being insanely-sweet too. Loved my berry yoghurt drink, and Mirror Mirror on the Wall was a fun eat. PS. This place probably needs no introduction. But after 4 visits (equally spread over a course of more than a year) of consistent excellence, I feel Luka deserves a mention here. I am not an all-day breakfast kind of guy. Luka has, however, managed to draw me to it, mainly because they have convinced me that every single item on their menu has been properly thought-out and that they do most things the right way. My favourite dish there has to be the Acai bowl. If that's what superfood is all about I am all into this superfood movement. Don't forget to try their coffees too, their iced salted caramel latte is amongst the top 3 cups of coffee that I enjoy in Bangkok. The cuts of pork were really good and there was nothing to complain about the soy sauce chicken. Serving size was unexpectedly huge. I struggled to finish my plate! The noodle though, I didn't love, but for 100/110THB for a big portion, location connected to a BTS station and the quality in general, I think it's more than good enough. #hawkerchan #singaporefoodinbangkok #michelinstar #michelinstarhawker #hawkerchanbangkok #hongkongroast #soysaucechicken #asokemyfoot #terminal21 #strangerinbangkok #strangerfirstimpression เพิ่มเติม

Cuisine Unplugged, Pullman Bangkok King Power อนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิ อาหารทะเล
[Family/Kid-friendly Sunday Brunch] Cuisine UnPlugged @Pullman Bangkok King Power I have to lend my support to the first Sunday Brunch I know in Bangkok that has made complete efforts to welcome families and kids week-in week-out. 1. Food corner dedicated to kids, with marshmallows, lollipops, pop-corn, hot dog buns and chocolate fondant, in addition to the expected array of dessert and ice-cream. 2. Small kids corner with toys, a tent and little tables for writing and colouring. 3. A balloon artist from noon to 2.30pm, the most skilful one I have seen in Thailand. He can make you anything, from Hello Kitty to Spiderman to Princess Elsa. Super impressive. Food-wise, for adults, it's a huge variety as well. Free-flow French oysters, numerous crabs and cold seafood, cold cuts and cheese, brunch food like egg benedict, sashimi, dim sum, pizza, pasta, Thai food etc. Honestly, there are hits as well as misses, my personal favourites are the crispy-skin suckling pig, grilled foie gras on toast and the really fresh blanched tiger prawn on ice. If you make your booking online using the link below, you will get the Brunch deal at 1225THB nett, and a kid under 11 can eat free with every paying adult (!!). Lastly, even the drinks are free-flow and included in the deal! Soft drinks, coffee, white/red/sparkling wine and Tiger/Chang/Singha beer! A brunch truly, truly, deliberately designed for families to have a good time, finally. ซูห์ริง นางลิ้นจี่・เย็นอากาศ อาหารยุโรป
The dinner began with a series of bread courses which shouted Germany without being overly exciting. It's when the non-bread dishes came where the experience quickly escalated. Absolutely loved the hand-cut noodles with cheese and mushroom sauce. It's a vegetarian dish and would have done just as well without the truffle. The main course of smoke Hungarian duck was flawless as well, something that will satisfy me any day. But my favourite dish has to be the last dessert, when I was almost completely knocked out as it was near midnight. German dark beer chocolate sauce(?!) with buckwheat ice cream and blackberries. Simply incredible. Flavour-wise it was less surprising than it sounded but it's something I will not forget in a hurry. Overall, the experience was very, very good without being overly expensive. It's not mind-blowing in terms of flavour, but to nitpick and point out a flaw would be extremely difficult. Maybe more sausage? Maybe the fish dish could be a little more memorable? But all these are so unimportant that it would be extremely petty to let them affect the my overall impression of the place. เพิ่มเติม

ARROZ Spanish Rice House ทองหล่อ อาหารสเปน
Was at Arroz on Saturday evening and I must admit I was pretty impressed with the authentic Spanish food on show. Most of their ingredients are imported from Spain and I like it that the food is more rustic than pretentious, done to give you a taste of Spain in Bangkok. As Arroz means rice, don't leave here without trying their rice dishes. Their squid ink Paella was tasty delicious, as were many of Chef Victor Burgos's tapas. I especially loved their grilled peppers and garlic shrimp. I wish the desserts were more memorable though, but the place is pretty new, I am sure they have more up their sleeve given more time. #arroz #spanish #spanishfood #authentic #strangerinbangkok #bangkokfoodies #suk53 #bkkbest #bkkfood #bkkeats #strangerfirstimpression #tapas #paella #jamon #churros #aroimakmak #spanishcoldcuts #newopeningbangkok #foodphotograhy เพิ่มเติม
