[First Impressions] Funky Lam What first intrigued me about Funky Lam was how they actually designed the space right from the start to transform the bright brunch institution that is Luka (Moto) into this funky hipster Laotian food destination with the use of blinds, lighting and a simple flip of Luka Moto's specials board. Quite brilliant, I must say. Then there's the Laotian food, something that sounds in close proximity but unfamiliar all at the same time. When the dishes were served, it felt like a mixture of Northern Thai (Sai Oua), Isaan (Larb Ped) and Vietnam (Beef soup), a tad confusing but made some sense once I had a look at the map and marked out Laos's borders. What's more important is that the food was generally very pleasant, not as spicy as I thought it would be (especially after the first bang with the fried chilli snack), but bold and tasty nonetheless. The riverweed crackers were a first for me, Sai Oua obviously cleaner and less grimey than the ones on the streets, and Larb Ped was a drier and more herby version than what I am used to. The beef marrow soup though, was the bomb. Hearty as hell, I feel it is the must-order dish at Funky Lam. I actually also enjoyed chomping into the assortment of leaves provided, as they presented a full array of taste sensations, from bitter to citrusy to sweet, making the meal more "authentic" in my opinion. So did Funky Lam help me understand what Laotian food actually is? Not really, but it sure is a good new place to have a casual dinner in Thong Lor. #funkylam #laotianfood #老天food #thetastethonglor #lukamoto #bangkokfoodies #thonglor #strangerfirstimpression #strangerinbangkok #R30
